Hello,
My name is John Scanlon and I now live in London. I knew Patrick Hanrahan when I was a little boy living in Kilbaha. My Grandfather Jame J. Hanrahan was a neighbour of his and was in some way related, though I do not know what the connection is. My mother is Breda Hanrahan who's aunt was married to Patrick Hanrahan, Breda (Julia) nee Shanahan.
I was amazed and delighted to find this site having typed 'Kilbaha' into my computer.
I would be delighted to get more information.

Could the name "Callaghan" have been changed somewhere along the way to "Callahan?" My grandfather was a Callahan and his ancestors settled Callahan, Florida. Also related are the Capes, McDaniel, Bishop, families.

Hi, My grandmothers maiden name was Mary Hanrahan. What struck me when I was looking at your pictures was the name Shine. I used to write my grandmothers sister Johanna Hanrahan Hurley in Grangeberry Fetherd (I think). This was 25 to 30 years ago. She had a daughter Betty Shine. Would there be a connection here? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello, I am trying to gather information about my wife's Hanrahan ancestry. Her maternal grandmother is Nellie Hanrahan (born on February 25, 1886, in Listowel, County Kerry, died on February 2, 1936, in San Francisco, California, USA.) I have been told by family members that Nellie's parents were John (The Major) Hanrahan and (unknown given name) Buckley. Nellie emigrated to the USA in 1906. She had many siblings including Tim and Jack who also emigrated to the USA.
I could not fing Nellie listed on this site, however, many things about Nellie's family seem to match the John Hanrahan family given here. Can anyone help us out with this? Is this "our" family?

Hello Again - This note is for the benefit of those who may have seen our earlier posting on this page. Kathleen and I have received helpful e-mail responses from Hanrahan cousins Orla H. and Pádraig K. as a result of that earlier posting. Their information, along with the information given on this website and information from Kathleen's mother, aunt and uncles has helped verify that the Hanrahan family on this web site is really our family. We compared detailed names, dates and places from the different sources and found the facts match almost perfectly. It was great to make this breakthrough in an important part of the family ancestry -- this website was a key connecting part for us.
Thanks too to Stefan Hanrahan from Dublin, another descendant of John the Major, for responding to our posting on this page. It is wonderful to get this international connection for the family that is so widespread now.
Thanks and Happy New Year, Chris and Kathleen (California, USA) ChrisRoyce@adelphia.net

My great-grandfather was John 'the Major' Hanrahan who was the father of Patrick Hanrahan married to my namesake Breda (Julia) Hanrahan (nee Shanahan). I'm amazed at this website and very excited about it..I've spent alot of my life thinking that there's not alot of us Hanrahans out there and would like to add my little bit of history to this family tree. I'm actually listed as Lily in the tree and it would be nice to see this corrected...I've also got a daughter named Sinead Bobby Holness and it would be lovely to see her name posted on the tree too!I've ran out of space but my e-mail address is:julia.hanrahan@ntlworld.com

My family visited Kilbaha every year when I was younger and I now try to visit as much as I can with my daughter. Dear Padraig, My compliments to you on your website - it's so well laid-out, professional-looking, and informative. I'm particularly interested in the information because I have Hanrahans (Kilbaha), Cunninghams (Kilbaha) and Finucanes (near Gale Bridge and in Ballybunion) in my family tree who may or may not be connected with your family. If you think there might be a connection I'd be very grateful if you would let me know. Starting with Hanrahans, my great-aunt, Brigid Shanahan (b. 1895) from Kilbaha married a Michael Hanrahan from Kilbaha. They had four children, Peggy (Holy Ghost sister in Nigeria), Mary (Holy Ghost sister in England and Dublin), Kathleen, and John (Jackie). Now on to Cunninghams, my great grandmother was a Johanna Cunningham from Kilbaha. Apparently her family owned a lot of land in Kilbaha. She married William O'Connor (probably from Kilbaha) and had four children: Mary, John (my grandfather, born 1875), Eddie, Patrick and Michael. Finally the Finucane connection: Mary O'Connor, above, the daughter of Johanna and William, married a William (Bill) Finucane. Mary (also known as Mainanne) and Bill lived near Gale Bridge near Moyvane. They had one daughter and seven sons, including a Paddy Finucane who may or may not be your Paddy Finucane. My Paddy Finucane was born perhaps between 1904 and 1910 and lived in Ballybunion. I know he remarried after his first wife died and that he and his second wife ran a guesthouse in Ballybunion, possibly called "Cliff House". He had four or five children from his first marriage. If anything above is familiar to you, could you respond to me here or at helen.oconnor@ireland.com. Thank you.

Just visited your website to see if I could get some clues for my gfather's family. They most likely came to USA in the 1840's/50's. My gfather was apparently 2nd generation born here and he was born in 1869. I don't think your branch is related but who knows. I have found some amazing sprouts of the family tree on my gmother's side (O'Connell from Abbeyfeale, Limerick). Thanks for allowing me to visit your family site.--maryann cochran

He was John Joseph Handrahan (his spelling) the son of John Joseph Handerahan (their spelling) and Catherine (name unknown). The latter were born in Uniontown, Pa. I don't know how early they came to USA. My gfather had brother's Michael, Lawrence and sister's Mary, Ellen and Catherine and they were all born in Atlas, PA. Anyone with ties???? Would love to hear from you.--maryann cochran

Hello!
Enjoyed reading your comments and appreciated the researach which went into this family tree. How happy many of you must be to find that "connection".
My grandparents were Agnes (Lockmiller(sp)) and Stephen Hanrahan. They had three sons, John (my father), Robert and Russell. Russell died in his late teens/early twenties. Robert-we lost track of. They were from Red Oak, Iowa.
My father married my mother during WWII when he was stationed with the Navy in Newport RI. After the war, we moved to Sidney, Iowa. By we, I refer to my parents, myself and two brothers, John Gerald & Steven. We were in Sidney only a few years, moved to California and then back east to Massachusetts.
His cousin Helen (Madden), who moved to California to be with her daughter and family, was kind enough to send me a Christmas card in recent years to keep us informed of their activities. However, the last card was misplaced when we moved and I lost contact with her. She did mention a family reunion somewhere in the area of (Iowa,Kansas,Nebraska???) organized by a Kerry Hanrahan. If anyone has any information regarding this, my brothers and I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, hope you can make a connection for us.

Here is some information from a cemetery in Minnesota, U.S.A.! Parish Cemetery of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church - Burnsville, Minnesota, city of Burnsville, Dakota County, Minnesota: T115N - R21W, section 15 This hillside cemetery is maintained on a regular basis and is in good shape. The cemetery is located in the western section of the city of Burnsville, near the eastern edge of the city of Savage, in Scott county. This cemetery is the former Mount Calvary Cemetery. The burial rows in this cemetery do not line up well and it appears that the rows may have been angled slightly to compensate for the cemeteries location on the side of a large hill. This is more pronounced in the older northern half of this cemetery. Within the older northern section of this cemetery there were several old slab style monuments that had been broken off and were lying flat at ground level. This appeared to have occurred some time ago, as many of these loose monuments have sunken into the sod and have grass growing out of the cracks. In the 1910 "History of Dakota and Goodhue Counties, Minnesota", by Editor-In-Chief Franklyn Curtiss-Wedge, he wrote: ‘... Mount Calvary Cemetery, located in section 15, was first consecrated to its use in 1859. It is a beautiful shady spot of two and one-half acres, owned and controlled by the St. John’s Church.’ (page 438) The Dakota county cemetery compilation lists this cemetery as: St. John the Baptist of Byrnsville Cemetery (formerly Mount Calvery), established 1859. 2 1/2 acres. Section 15, NE 1/4 of SE 1/4, Township 115, Range 21. Judicial Road between County Road 34 and Burnsville Parkway. This cemeteries burial monuments were transcribed during the spring of 2000. My Hanrahan connection goes back to Mary Hanrahan - born in 1818 in Galway, Ireland - possibly in or near Athenry or Lougherea. She married Peter Haverty and had four children (that I know of)Kate, Hanora (Hannah), Patrick, and Mary. Mary emigrated to the US in 1886 on the SS Prussian with her son Patrick and lived out her life in Waltham, Massachusetts. I don't know any of Mary Hanrahan's sibilings or parents, but thought by posting here someone may know of Mary? Very nice site!

Hi, my name is Dermot Hanrahan and my grandfather John Hanrahan came from Moyvane (or Newtown Sandes as he used to call it) where he was born in 1897. I think my great grandfather's name was Michael but I'm not sure.I think he was (among other things) a builder. My grandfather spent most of his life in Limerick and died in 1993.He was married to Mollie Healy from Donoughmore in Cork. I don't know if there is a relationship although I suspect there must be - probably earlier than 'John' in your website. Dermot.

Hello
What a fantastic web site, I have been greatly interested by the history of the Shine members. My mother is Rose Shine nee Sheehan and was born in Listowel county Kerry in 1950 to Joseph and Mary Shine nee Casey. My grandmother Mary Casey was born in Brosna in 1921 and my grand father Joseph Shine was born in Charles street Listowel in 1917. Betweeen them they had Margarate, Kathleen, Teressa, Rose, Vera, Micheal, Danny, Morris and Teddy Shine, I think that is all of them. Well basically they had 9 children!
Both my grandparents have passed away and I now live in England with my mum and dad my mum married a John Sheehan from Abbeyfeale son of Mortimor Sheehan and Hannah Brosnan, nee Sheehan.
I would love to know if I am linked to any of these wonderful people mentioned on this website, the only other peice of information I have on my history is the names which were found on a head stone just outside Listowel on the Ballybunion road. When we visited in Sep 2003 my uncle Danny Shine had found a headstone in this cemetary and cleaned it up it was in memory of "Maurice Shine who departed this life on the 26th September 1867 aged 64 years and also mentioned his loving wife who passed away on the 12th July 1854 aged 41 years". It reads that the momentum has been errected by their sorrowing children.
I am very pround of my Irish roots and would love to learn more about the Shine family tree not just for myself but also for my mum as she unfortunately has little information as my nan died so young at 49 years of age. I would love to learn more to pass on to her as she does not have a clue how to use the interent I have told her I am doing this and she is very excited.
A great website thanks
Keri Sheehan

Hi I am Eric Shane Hanrahan. I am currently in Clarksville, TN. I moved from South Mississippi where my Grandfather moved from Kentucky and Ohio area. I am the son of John Allen Hanrahan, Grandson of John F. Hanrahan, Great Grandson of John ? Hanrahan. I think this website is awesome and very interesting. I am very proud of the Hanrahan name and have never met another, other than my G-Grandfather, Grandfater, and Father and of course my immediate family. I have 3 children Skyler, Madison, Riley. 1 boy and 2 girls. I am in the U.S. Army and through an Army web site I found that My wife and I are the only Hanrahans in an Army of 550,000 soldiers. There is however an O'Hanrahan serving with us at Ft. Campbell, KY. I can't wait to tell my Grandfather about this web site and look forward to reading all of it. By the way is there any official or ball park count of the number of Hanrahans in the USA? Would love to know the number such a rarity in the South.
Sincerely,
Eric S. Hanrahan

Hello there: I'm trying to locate Kevin Hanrahan, whom I met in new York city in 1970. We kept in touch up until 1980 or 1981. As I have tried through many other ways but I have found myself with quite a few guys with the same name, it has ocurred to me that if I'm not mistakes, he was born in New York on november 13, 1950 or 1951. I would appreciate if there is any information, to have it refered to rafafle@cantv.net

My name is John Mc Carthy and I`d like to tell you that the Hanrahan sign from the old store is still there, I always wondered about the history of it because the residents of the last 17 years are O`Donovans they briefly kept the store open as a cake store they then redecorated it into a sitting room but the outside remained the same.
Thanks for clearing up the history of something that always puzzled me.

My name is Nigel Hanrahan. I'm Canadian, living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I have relatives here in Canada...a brother (Matthew), a sister (Siobhan) and my parents (John Trevor Hanrahan and my mum Patricia Hanrahan, nee Burroughs).
The Hanrahan line for me goes something like this:
Nigel Hanrahan (1958- )...me, son of
John Trevor Hanrahan (1929- )..my dad, born in Erode, India near Madras, or what is now called Chennai, son of
Hugh Michael Joseph O'Hanrahan (deceased), born near Islamabad, (British)India, passed away in Brisbane, Austrailia, son of
Patrick John O'Hanrahan, (deceased) born in (British) India, son of
Michael O'Hanrahan, (d) born in the village of Tulla, County Clare, c. 1811-1812, who left Ireland in 1836, with his wife Honney and son Thomas on the ship "The City of Edinburgh", never to return to his homeland, having enlisted in the British Army in the spring of that year.
And yes, I've been to Tulla. (1982)

I submitted an entry last week that I do not believe posted to your site.
I am an O'Hanrahan residing in the U.S. and am interseted in any information (stories, family lines, etc.) pertaining to this great name. This is the only branch of my family tree that needs a lot of assistance.
Please contact me at blaithin@msn.com and caption the subject matter as Hanrahan Family. - I have my filter set on high so anyones initial response will go to my junk mail folder for me, to hopefully, find.
Thanks to whomever responds.
P.S. This web site is VERY well done.

I wonder if we are connected?

Hello, my name is Michael Hanrahan, and I live in a small city about an hour away from Rochester, New York. My descendents came from Ireland and when searching the internet for links to my family's past, yours was first on the list. I don't know positively is there is any connection, but I just thought it was interesting and wanted to give you my two sense.

Hi Stephan; I also am a decendent of the Hanrahan family. My great great grandfather married a Mary Ann Hanrahan July 17, 1861. We are looking for information on the Hanrahan family. Mary Ann Hanrahans family was Timothy and Margaret Hanrahan who came here to the USA from Ireland. We know that they also had a son William and possibly other siblings we haven't found yet. I was hopping that you might be a connection to the Hanrahan family tree that I have been looking for. Your help would be appreciated greatly. Gary L. Holden

My great-grandfather and his several uncles, Hanrahans all, emirgrated from Ireland by way of Liverpool around 1860, from Counties Kerry and Galway. I know that there were Cunninghams in the family in Ireland, by marriage. There is even now a Hanrahan's Pub in County Galway, which I know is operated by relatives.
