Descendants of Ellen Callaghan (nee Hanrahan)

1. ELLEN HANRAHAN (MICHAEL1) was born in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She emigrated to Australia and married Owen Callagahan on June 4th. 1902 in All Hallows Church, Boulder City. Owen hailed from County Clare, Ireland.
Ellen was the last child born to Michael and Margaret Hanrahan. Although known as Ellen she was christened Margaret on February 7th. 1876. It seems likely that her full name was Margaret Ellen but she was called Ellen to distinguish her from her mother. She followed in the footsteps of her siblings Johanna, James and Jane and took the emigrant boat to Australia. According to her death cert she was '32 years in Western Australia' however it seems likely that previous to this she lived in Melbourne for some time. Her sisters Johanna and Jane would have been living there at the time. This would put her year of arrival in Australia circa 1900.
In the Shine family history it is recorded that Ellen accompanied Jane and John Shine to Western Australia with John remarking that he managed to find two lovely girls 'for the price of one.' The history also states that ...'the three of them then went to Boulder to live where John had a thriving business of supplying fresh vegetables and water to the miners while his wife Jane and her sister Ellen ran a boarding house and cooked hot meals for the appreciative miners. Jane and Ellen also made jams and jelly as well as sewing bottles of liquor into sacks of grain and potatoes, the women also hollowed out large pumpkins to hide extra bottles of drink.'
However Ann Battista, Ellen's granddaughter, maintains that Ellen met her future husband, Owen Callaghan, in Melbourne and headed west with him. In any event Ellen married Owen in All Hallows Church, Boulder City on June 4th. 1902. Owen came from a farming background in Co. Clare and his parents his parents were Canice and Brigid (nee Harvey). Witnesses to the marriage were Michael Thomas O'Halloran amd Catherine Teresa Kilderry. According to Ellen's marriage cert she was aged 22 when she married, her death cert states she was 23 and her baptismal record suggests she was actually 26. It's a case of taking your pick but it is likely that her baptismal record is the most accurate.
Ann Battista of Collie, Western Australia and was helpful in piecing together parts of Ellen's life. According to Ann...
...Ellen got off the emigrant boat in Melbourne about 1902 (this would make sense as Ellen's sister, Johanna, was living in the area). It was here she first met her future husband, Owen, and together they headed for Western Australia. They stayed a while in the goldfields area, where Owen worked as a miner, before moving to the coalmining town of Collie where they opened a greengrocers shop. Most of the children were born in Collie. In 1908 they actually returned to Ireland with their children and Owen's mother. Ann's mother was three at the time. They had intended to settle in Ireland, but finding this difficult they returned to Australia again after six months. They settled in Collie where Ellen died on November 13th. 1934 aged 57 and Owen died aged 85. One of their children, Eileen (aged 90) is still alive and living with her daughter in Bunbury.

Germany and emigrated to Australia in 1926 and died on 17/3/1989. He was a
merchant seaman and worked in the timber industry in Collie and was a well known
character around Collie still riding his bike at 83 years of age.
