Generation No. 1

 

1.  JOHANNA2 HANRAHAN  (MICHAEL1) was born Abt. 1862 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry, and died August 2, 1909 in Heidelberg, Melbourne, Australia.  She married JOHN O'CONNOR July 12, 1890 in Carlton, Victoria, Australia.  He was born Abt. 1865 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry, and died Bef. 1917.

  Hanrahan grave Johanna and James, Melbourne.jpg (41486 bytes) The grassy area in the centre of the photo covers the unmarked grave of Johanna, her infant son James and her brother James in Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton. The grassy area is actually two plots with the three Hanrahans buried in the left half in Plot 582. Plot 583 on the right side is marked 'Cunningham' on the cemetery plan. Johanna and James's mother was Margaret Cunningham so possibly it is more than a coincidence that the Hanrahan and Cunningham plots lie side by side. Notes for JOHANNA HANRAHAN:

According to the baptismal register for Murher parish, Kerry, Johanna was christened on October 2, 1862. Her godparents are listed as Thomas Cronin and Ann Cunningham.

Her death certificate reveals that in 1882,when she was about twenty years old, she emigrated to Australia. Over the subsequent years her siblings, James, Ellen and Jane would follow in her footsteps. Johanna spent the first three years in Queensland followed by twenty-four years in Victoria. She married John O'Connor in 1890 in Carlton. He was also from Moyvane but it is unknown whether they travelled out together. Johanna and John later seperated and when Johanna died  of 'Pulmonary Tuberculosis' in 1909 it seems that a Mr. and Mrs. Moore became the guardians of her four sons, Jack, Mick, Tom and Bill.  (See photo below).

Tom's daughter Irene. Irene said when she was a young girl, Tom took her and Boysie to visit two elderly, widowed sisters when they went to Melbourne.  One was referred to as Auntie Jane and the other Auntie Nora.  She knows that one was Mrs Moore and the other Mrs Campion but doesn't know which Christian name belonged to which.  She understood them to be second (or maybe third) cousins of Johanna's.  She's fairly certain that it was Mrs Moore who is the lady in the picture and the one who, together with her husband, took the boys in when Johanna died.  By the time Irene met the 'aunts' they were both widowed and living together and since, by then, they seemed quite old to her, she's not sure whether the one she called Auntie Jane or Auntie Nora is the one in the photo. The eldest son, Michael, was 16 and her youngest, Bill, was 8 at the time of Johanna's death  The two older boys studied by night and worked at a post office by day to contribute to the upkeep of themselves and the two younger boys.

Johanna is buried along with her infant son, James and her younger brother, James, in Melbourne cemetery.

2.  MICHAEL JOSEPH3 O'CONNOR (JOHANNA2 HANRAHAN, MICHAEL1) was born October 24, 1892 in Carlton, Victoria, Australia, and died May 5, 1921 in Fitzroy North, Victoria, Australia.  He married HELENA JOSEPHINE BARRY December 8, 1917 in Fitzroy North, Victoria, Australia.  She was born September 3, 1892 in Manchester, England, and died March 19, 1957 in Carnegie, Victoria, Australia.
