THE DESCENDANTS OF
MICHAEL HANRAHAN AND MARGARET CUNNINGHAM
KILBAHA, MOYVANE, COUNTY KERRY, IRELAND.
Hi Folks!
My name is Pádraig Kenny from County Leitrim, Ireland. I am researching the various branches of the Hanrahan family tree with Michael Hanrahan and Margaret Cunningham as the starting point. Michael and Margaret lived on a farm in the townland of Kilbaha, a couple of miles outside Moyvane in north Co. Kerry. While I do not have Michael's dates of birth and death, the 1901 census of Ireland lists Margaret as a 67 year old widow. This would mean she was born circa 1834.
This was once the homeplace of Michael and Margaret. It is
now used as a farm building.

The National Library of Ireland contains a copy of the baptismal records for Kilbaha during the 19th century. Above is the information relating to the baptism of Michael Hanrahan and Margaret Cunningham's children. All the names were in Latin, the name of the officiating priest is under the dates and the godparents are listed in the column on the right. According to these records there were nine Hanrahan children baptized. All indications are that two of these children, Patrick and Catherine, died young.
Catherine's birth registration.
The rest of the family were...
J<b>ohn 'The Major'...who stayed on the home farm in Kilbaha, married Elizabeth Buckley.
William (my great grandfather)...who lived in Barnaderg, Co. Galway, married Bridget Ryan.
Johanna...who emigrated to Australia about 1882 and married John O'Connor.
James...who emigrated to Australia circa 1889 and died in his early twenties.
Jane...who emigrated to Australia about 1895 and married John Shine.
Michael...who lived in Ballineen, Co. Cork and married Brigid O'Sullivan.
Ellen...who emigrated to Australia about 1902 and married Owen (O') Callaghan.

The Cunninghams
The following information comes from Helen O'Connor who is a great great granddaughter of Margaret Cunningham's brother, Bryan. Helen credits Tom Stack for much of the information she has gathered. Tom is a second cousin of her father, who lives in Ennis but was born in Moyvane and has been researching his family history for seventeen years.
It's thought that Margaret's father, Myles came to Kilbaha in the parish of Newtownsandes (now called Moyvane) in Co. Kerry from the Abbeydorney area of Co. Kerry. Seemingly Myles had two brothers, Daniel and Timothy, who also settled in the area.
Myles had eight children, one boy and seven girls:
Bryan......who married Johanna Hudson in 1847.
Honora (Norrie) ...... who married Jim Thornton.
Ellen ........ who married Dan Kearney of Moyvane.
Anne (Nance) .......who married Patrick O'Connor.
Mary ......who married James Moore of Moyvane in 1874.
Johanna .......who married Tom/Dan Cronin.
Brigid .........who married Ger/John Mulvihill
Margaret.....who married Michael Hanrahan.
Everyone in the area knew of the seven daughters because it so unusual to have seven sisters all married and living in the parish at the same time. The descendants of these Cunninghams will be detailed on Helen O'Connor's website.

While I have made slow but steady progress over the last couple of years my family tree is far from complete. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who can contribute to the tree. My eventual aim is to present all the information in a book.
Along with my sources, I have not included various photographs and biographical details on the website yet. However I will forward them directly to anyone who can't stand the excitement.
In either instance, contact me at padken@hotmail.com or leave a message on the Guestbook.
Uncles and Cousins?
This family tree, scribbled on a piece of paper and found at the back of a drawer, appears to detail Michael's (husband of Margaret Cunningham) brothers and their children. The far left column are the individuals dealt with on this website. As far as the rest of it is concerned I have made little or no progress. Perhaps it may tie in with someone else's research out there...
